Who are the Masters? The Ottawa Pacers Masters group skaters are of all levels - beginners through advanced. A couple of our members have skated since they were kids, but most took up speedskating during their 30s, 40s or 50s. The group includes both Senior (18-29 years old) and Master (30+ years old) skaters. Currently our members range from 20 to 60+ years of age. Our members skate for many different reasons - fun, fitness, racing and anything in between. This is a sociable group, and you'll often find participants meeting for a beverage following practice. How to Get Started Click here for the Introduction to Speed Skating for Women and Girls. For women, this is the best way to get a
taste for the sport in a session targeted specifically for beginners. The Pacers welcome new skaters of all ages, genders, and ability levels! For those who can’t do the women’s Intro program, you can attend the first six weeks of our practices to try out the sport, then join the club for the season if you choose to. These practices are not exclusively targeted towards beginners and aren’t as in-depth as the women’s Intro, but they will still give you great instruction. If you have basic skating skills on ‘regular’ skates you will likely do fine at these sessions. Regular practices are on Tuesdays from 9pm to 10pm at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata. Rental skates are available and the mandatory safety gear may also be available on a rental basis (see the women’s Intro page for more information on the required gear). The fee for this six-week session is $140, which goes towards your year’s membership if you join the club. For more information about the masters or to sign up for the six-week trial option, email ottpacers@gmail.com and specify ‘masters’ in the subject line. For the women’s Intro program, email adultspeedskate@gmail.com. We hope to see you on the ice! |
